The ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene; chemical formula (C8H8 C4H6 • • C3H3N) n) is a synthetic thermoplastic resin derived from styrene polymerized with acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene, and therefore can be defined as the terpolymer. The proportions may vary from 15% to 35% of acrylonitrile, from 5% to 30% butadiene and from 40% to 60% of styrene. It 'a common thermoplastic polymer used to make light, rigid objects such as pipes, musical instruments (especially the flute and clarinet), golf club heads, parts or whole car bodies and toys like the famous LEGO bricks, as well as as a container for assembly of electrical and electronic components. It has good stiffness and toughness at low temperatures down to -40 ° C, high hardness, resistance to impact and scratches. The ABS is widely used in the development of products through the use of rapid prototyping machines that use production techniques such as FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) .It print well for injection, extrusion and thermoforming, welding and paste well and can be screwed with self-tapping screws.
The granules of ABS plastic of size less than 1 micrometer are used in inks for tattoos since they have the characteristic of being particularly vivid.
